There are times when assistance may come from the most unexpected places, and that is what happened for Ann Glancey, a retired schoolteacher. As a result of code violations, she was facing up to $3000 per day and fines and was unable to pay them.
Anne was notoriously reclusive and had no friends or family that could come to her aid. That was when an unexpected couple, Kristin and Adam Polhemus, decided to step in and help her during her time of need.
Anne Glancey’s home was falling down around her and the Township where she lived was threatening to fine her $1000 per day per violation. She needed the paint scraped from her home, a rusted car removed from the property and the grass need to cut.
She was a retired schoolteacher and grew up in the house but she didn’t know what to do. She had very little money and was a recluse, so she had no friends or family to help her.
When Adam and Kristin Polhemus moved in next door five years earlier, there were the only neighbours to reach out to Anne to form a friendship. When they learned of her predicament, they discussed helping but she would change the subject.
It was the summer of 2016 when Adam and Kristen decided to help her with her code violations. They enlisted the help of neighbours and volunteers who came to assist.
There was a lot of work to be done and it took every weekend to accomplish their goals during the summer.
Anne started coming out of her shell. Before this happened, she would isolate herself inside of the house every day. She was now bringing out fresh orange juice and carrot cake.
The house was scraped and painted, the grass got cut and the old car was taken away.
She formed friendship with more than her neighbours.
It was estimated that it may have caused between $10,000 and $15,000 to have professionals do the work.
All of her property violations have been erased.
