8-year-old Burn Victim Gets Thousands of Christmas Cards

A young girl named Safyre Terry went through a horrible ordeal last year when her family was killed in an arson attack. She also suffered greatly, with burns over 75% of her body, not to mention having to deal with the loss of her father and siblings. Throughout it all, she has managed to maintain a positive attitude.

For Christmas, she only asked for one thing, to have enough Christmas cards to fill a small tree that was given to her. This request was put online and immediately went viral. As of now, Safyre has received letters, presents and cards from thousands of supporters as well as over $330,000 in donations through her crowdfunding campaign. An organization that helps sick children, Baking Memories 4 Kids, has also provided a trip to Disney World.

Liz Dolder is Safyre’s auntie and guardian. She is the one that originally put the plea for Christmas cards on Facebook. In addition, she has been keeping Facebook up-to-date with pictures and updates from this young girl.

“We are so forever grateful for everyone generosity. YOU ALL have just been so incredibly amazing.”

Dolder’s husband lost his job in August and they set up a crowdfunding page to assist with medical bills. It really didn’t begin to take off, however, until the story about this brave young girl went viral.

The money from this crowdfunding campaign will be used to find a stable home and a trust fund will be set up for Safyre’s education.

“She’s my reason. I knew that when she was saved from the fire. The world is so filled with hate. Never in our wildest dreams did we think that she’d bring the world together over Christmas cards.”

The fire occurred in 2003 as the result of an arson attack. When the home burned down, it took the life of her 2-year-old brother, 3-year-old sister, 11-month-old half-brother and her father. The only survivor from the house was Safyre, who was found next to her father’s body because he had protected her from the flames.
