A barber from Wales tells the story about how he was able to help an autistic child through what he describes as “His first proper haircut.” He had been trying to help the boy overcome his fears for months.
James “Jim the Trim” Williams works in a Barbershop at North Port Talbot in Wales, UK. He posted the story to his Facebook page of how a young boy named Mason, who had recently been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, was brought to him for a haircut. To help him deal with what was obviously a stressful situation, he ended up lying on the floor next to him.
He went on to explain that for the past few months, he had been trying to cut Mason’s hair after he was recommended by a friend of Mason’s parents.
Williams had been trying a number of ways to cut Mason’s hair, but for months had been unable to do so successfully. In many cases, he said Mason would simply run away in fear.
But on November 3, he finally achieved giving him a haircut. In his words…
“We both layed [sic] on the floor in silence & he allowed me to cut away and give him his first proper haircut.”
Individuals who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder suffer from a number of symptoms, including increased sensitivity. Even everyday situations may be more distressing or uncomfortable to an individual who suffers from this disorder. Williams was able to make Mason’s parents happy with what he achieved, which is a part of his job that he loves!
Williams believes that Mason’s parents deserve more credit, and he thanked them for allowing him to be part of their journey.
