The weather in Norway can get quite cold in December, and although many people in the area may be used to the cold, the thought of jumping in a lake is the last thing on their mind! That was not the case with this gentleman, however, who decided to jump in a half frozen lake but he did so for a very good reason.
The 36-year-old man, whose name is Lars Jørun Langøien actually had it in mind that he was going to go for a swim. He was along with a few coworkers on his way to Sognsvann, a lake which lies just north of Oslo. When he got to the area, however, he found that there was a much more noble reason to jump in the water.
As they were approaching the lake, the thin layer of ice over the water caught their eye
They were checking the ice in different areas of the lake near the pier and they saw a duck disappear underneath it.
When it showed up on the other side, it was in a bit of trouble.
The ice where the duck was now was much thicker and it wasn’t able to break through. The duck tried a few times but then flipped upside down and really got stuck!
Langøien didn’t hesitate; he jumped right in to save the helpless animal.
He had already mentally prepared to go for a swim in the icy water, so it wasn’t too much of a stretch when his body hit the frigid liquid.
He moved toward the duck, cracked the ice and brought the duck to safety on land.
The duck was still having some difficulties, even though it was now on dry land. Langøien found it was necessary to resuscitate the duck and it began breathing again!
Now that the duck was safe, Langøien decided to exit the frigid cold water.
Originally, he was prepared to do some ice bathing and although this was a slightly different experience, he still felt satisfied with what was done.
Langøien doesn’t consider himself a hero or feel that he did anything overly impressive. I would have to say, however, that this duck certainly disagrees!
If it weren’t for his fast actions, the duck would not have likely survived the ordeal. That is why Langøien’s friends feel that he is a hero for what he did on that cold day.
