Meet Sindhutai Sapkal, also known as “Mother of Orphans.” She has adopted more than 1,000 children in Pune, India.
Born in 1948, Sindhutai married a 30-year old abusive husband when she was only 10. Having experienced begging for food in the streets, she later devoted her life adopting children.
To date, she runs five orphanages and has adopted 1,042 children; most of them are now doctors, engineers, and teachers.
Her work has earned her a total of 273 awards, including CNN IBN’s Real Heroes Awards in 2012.
