There are times when an unexpected event occurs and it is so amazing, it can be described as a miracle. That was the case with this family, as they struggled to survive a most unusual and horrifying event.
It started out as a fairly normal day, with a mother and her three sons, along with their 72-year-old grandmother, heading for home. It is what happened next, however, that sent chills down my spine the first time I heard it! It is every parents nightmare.
25-year-old Britta Franck was heading to her home in Wichita with her 3 sons and 72-year-old grandmother. The day was cold and rainy and it was necessary to cross a low-water bridge to get home. While crossing the bridge, however, the current swept the Yukon XL into the creek that was high because of the weather. The SUV was carried downstream, hit a tree and flipped onto its side. At that point, they were pinned against the tree and the front passenger car window was broke. Frigid cold water was beginning to pour into the vehicle.
Her youngest son, Devon, was still strapped into the car seat but now it was completely underwater! She began to unbuckle him and the water continued to rise inside of the vehicle.
As you can imagine, Britta was frantic at this point and she didn’t know what she was going to do, because she needed to exit through the back passenger window. There was a problem, however, the window was locked and there was no way for her to open it.
Fortunately, the situation corrected itself because the window suddenly rolled down on its own. It is thought that it may have shorted out because of the water. Regardless of why it happened, it gave them the opportunity to escape.
The mother and boys were able to exit the vehicle. Miguel, the oldest son (6 years old) was holding onto a nearby tree. Britta was sitting on top of the vehicle with a three-year-old and one-year-old clinging to her. The grandmother was sitting in the passenger window but she was bleeding and waist deep in the freezing water.
All the while this was taking place, the SUV was being inundated with the rushing water. It would only take one wrong move to break it loose from the tree where it was resting and send it downstream. If that were to occur, it would certainly cost the family their life!
The mother called 911 several times and before long, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol was on the scene. The SUV was still approximately 10-15 feet from the bank of the creek, so the officer couldn’t reach them. A pickup truck and additional reinforcements arrived on the scene and a rope was used to pull the family, one by one, to safety.
The family was taken to the hospital where they were treated. Every member of the family has recovered from the accident and is doing fine. In Britta’s words:
“We are truly blessed.”
