Johanna Quaas was born on November 20, 1925 in Germany. She had her first gymnastics competition in 1934 when she was 11. She got married in 1963, and trained again when she turned 57.
In 2012, the Youtube video showing her performance during the Turnier der Meister in Cottbus went viral.
That same year, she was certified by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest gymnast in the world.
