Quarterback Given Opportunity to Keep His Fourth-Grade Promise

The prom is one of the most important events of our high school years. It is exciting for anyone, but for the young woman who gets to go to the prom with the star of the football team, it can be a dream come true.

That is something that Mary Lapkowicz recently experienced firsthand. She was able to go to the prom with the quarterback, Ben Moser, who played for a team at a neighboring high school.

To make the story even more amazing, Lapkowicz has Down syndrome and of Moser does not. They have been friends since the fourth grade. Moser has always done his best to include Lapkowicz in school activities.

Their fourth-grade teacher, Tracey Spogli said that he watched over her constantly. “If she was looking like she wasn’t having fun, he would go over and talk to her. He would pull her in to whatever activity they were doing. He just always watched out for her.”

He also made a promise during the fourth grade school year that he would take her to the prom when they got older.

Lapkowicz thought that he had forgotten, as prom season was arriving, but then he showed up with balloons that had the word “prom” written on them.

She was prepared to go with some friends, but now, that promise from so many years ago had become a reality.

Ben’s mother posted on Facebook that she had tearful joys in her eyes as she watched the promise made to such a beautiful girl so many years ago come to life.

They attended the prom together on May 8, 2015.
