When a person is born with Down syndrome, they are often treated differently than other children. It is almost as if other people feel that they are not “normal” but in any case, they are certainly made to feel different. There is one girl, however, that is making a difference in how people perceive Down syndrome.
Katie Meade is one of those individuals who allow people to look past Down syndrome and at the same time, create an awesome opportunity for themselves. She is a model and has recently landed a job for Beauty & Pinups, a beauty brand. She is the face of one of their new products.
Katie does a fantastic job of showing others that people who have Down syndrome are beautiful and should be treated as such. She lives in Des Moines’s Iowa, and is 32 years old. She described the experience recently in an interview:
It was amazing. It was fun trying on clothes and getting ready for the photos. I felt so special! It was really cool to feel like a true model.
Aside from the fact that she is a model, she has also won a gold medal at the Special Olympics. She is an ambassador for Best Buddies International, a nonprofit organization that helps those living with disabilities to find new friends and work.
Beauty & Pinups donates to that organization. They are excited that Katie has come on board as a model.
Katie’s picture appears on the packaging. She is striking a power pose and wearing a T-shirt that reads “Fearless.” Everyone is excited about how the cover came out.
Kenny Kahn, CEO of Beauty & Pinups had this to say about the photo shoot:
he is a very special person and it comes across in her photos. She represents not just hope; she represents reality.
Katie enjoyed the fact that they made her feel welcomed and loved. They provided her with an opportunity to show the world that people with disabilities also like beauty and fashion and they like to look good, just like everyone else.
