Waitress Writes Powerful Post on Facebook Responding to a Customer Who Stiffed Her

Taylar Cardovara is currently working as a waitress at a P.F. Chang’s restaurant in Colorado. She is 22 years old and is very familiar with the service industry, as she used to work for Jamba Juice as well. One of the things that all workers in the service industry, such as Taylar, need to learn early on is that the pay often is directly associated with tips. It is those tips that she uses to help raise her young daughter.

Cardovara recently waited a table where the customer racked up a rather large bill of $187. The customary tip is anywhere from 15% to 20% but this particular customer didn’t leave her anything.

Cardovara wrote that the struggled to put clothes on her daughter and to keep them fed. That was how she opened her viral thread on Facebook. She further wrote:

Whenever you feel like it’s probably fine to not tip your server, that’s one more bill stacking up because they’re short on money. This is food for the week that our families will go without because you didn’t think it was necessary.

The federal minimum wage for food workers in the United States is $2.13 per hour. Many who work as food servers depend on tips to care for their families. Half of those workers are living near or at poverty, with the median wage being under $22,000 per year.

Cordova signed off of her facebook post by emphasizing the struggles of those working in her industry.

Servers are paid a base pay of $2-5/hr depending on the employer, so next time you don’t want to tip, regardless of the situation prior to receiving your bill, think about how much you would have to work that week off $2-5/hr to feed your family, not just you,” she wrote. “Could you pay your bills based on that pay alone? Could you feed your family AND yourself? Because that’s what happens when you choose to not tip. Please, please tip your servers.
