Women Need More Sleep Than Men Because Their Brains Are Harder Working – Science

You don’t need to convince any of us that we could use more sleep. In fact, many of us go through out lives sleep deprived, and as we get older, we tend to go to be later and get up earlier. What may surprise you, however, is that there are reasons why women may need to hit the hay more often than men.

Recent scientific studies have shown that women need more sleep than men. The reason? Because their brains work harder! Yes, it seems as if scientists have given women the green light to get more sleep, and I’m sure that nobody is complaining.

Of course, all of us could probably use extra sleep, but for the ladies, you now have official permission

1. Time to Hit The Hay, Ladies – Scientists have revealed that women need more sleep than men. According to Jim Horne, A Professor at Longhborough University:

“For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger. These feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”

2. So Do You Need 8 Hours? – Not everyone will fit into the same group when it comes to how many hours to sleep. Some people do fine on 6 hours while some may need 9. According to Professor Horne, however, The brain of a woman is wired differently and is more complex that a man’s brain. As a result, then need a little more sleep.

3. Why is a Woman’s Brain More Complex? – Women tend to do more multi-tasking than men and they tend to give their brains a more strenuous workout. That leads to the need for more recovery time.

4. So Why Are Men Tired? – Men may also have jobs that require extensive decision making and therefore, would require more sleep. On average, however, women still need more sleep.
