The forward thinking that takes place in the Netherlands is not only something that can benefit the residents and tourists, it can also inspire others. There are plenty of other countries around the world who could learn from their example.

1. There are no abandoned pets
There are strict laws against animal abuse and they have said there are no homeless cats or dogs in the Netherlands.
2. They have a solar powered bike lane
Known as SolaRoad, it was opened in 2015. It is only 100 m long but the construction is amazing. The solar power from the road lights the streets and powers electric vehicles.
3. Charging points for electric cars are only 50m apart
The sustainable transportation system in the Netherlands is inspiring.
4. There is a town where nobody drives cars
Houten is considered the safest place in the world. The 4000 citizens made the decision in the 1980s not to drive. They cycle everywhere.
5. They are banning the sale of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles
By 2025 there will be no petrol or diesel cars in the Netherlands.
6. They have to close prisons because of a lack of prisoners
They have taken serious steps to reduce crime and it has been successful. 19 prisons have had to close since 2009
7. They have ecoducts so wildlife can cross the roads safely
The government is also interested in protecting wildlife. They have constructed several animal crossings to allow the critters to cross the road safely
