You never quite know what is going on under your feet. At times, there is nothing more than normal Earth but how many times did you walk over something phenomenal and didn’t know it? For one farmer in Scotland, a simple look in an area that seemed out of place revealed something that is absolutely amazing.
It happened in the open expanse of Scotland. A farmer noticed that some stones seemed out of place so he pulled them aside. He had no idea that he was about to discover an underground home.
It was much more than just a house, however, what he discovered was the lost city of Skara Brae. It is one of the oldest settlements in Great Britain and is thought to be 5000 years old! Let’s take a look inside at some of the wonderful things that were hidden underground all those years.
It happened on the island of Orkney, when a farmer moved aside some stones.
This led to a house that was buried underground. This house, had a lot of rooms inside!
What he actually found was a 5000-year-old settlement, the lost city of Skara Brae. It is older than the pyramids.
Sand dunes had covered the city making it a well-preserved historic location.
The majority of the city was destroyed but eight houses were well-preserved. Those eight houses were believed to hold as many as 100 people.
In the middle of the homes was a waterproof basin. It is thought that the homeowners kept fish in them, which made up most of their diet. The homes are connected by underground tunnels. They also have stones blocking the entrances for privacy.
Inside of the huts were quite a few rooms. One of the rooms was larger for the head of the household.
It’s amazing when you think about a farmer moving a stone and it led to one of the greatest discoveries of all time.
