This Awesome Bridge Takes a Dive between Denmark and Sweden

The Øresund strait is a relatively narrow strip of water that separates Sweden from Denmark. For years, it was an obstacle that cut the free flow of traffic running between those two countries, aside from those who would cross it by ferry. More recently, however, a bridge was built to cover the distance, which is approximately 16 km.

Although ferries were used in the past to cross, the journey took a long time to get from one side to the other. After a decision was made to build a bridge, it took quite a while to engineer it and then took some extra time to build it. There were also some people who didn’t want the bridge built, but there is no standing in the way of progress.

This bridge is not only a wonder because of the beauty, the engineering that went into building this bridge is nothing short of amazing.

The bridge is a four-lane highway and it also includes a railway on 2 different levels. It is huge!

The first part of the bridge ends on an artificial island in the middle of the Øresund strait. At that point, the road disappears underwater into a tunnel.

This rather unusual design was picked because it would not block the path of planes that land at the Copenhagen airport. It also allowed ships to sail across the strait unimpeded.

It is quite impressive when you view it from the air!
