When you live in a small town, it may have its very own personality, and it is something that most people in the area truly come to appreciate. There may be outsiders that come in every once in a while and get a taste of what the town has to offer. In some cases, it is enough to convince those outsiders that it is the perfect place to live.
In a small town in the northeastern United States, there is a rather unusual phenomena that can be seen in the downtown area. They are tiny doors that seem to be popping up in many locations, and as you are walking along, you just may find a few. Here is what they mean.
It started in 2005 when residents of this Michigan town started noticing fairy doors in the surrounding area.
The doors are built into the side of various buildings, restaurants and shops. Once they started gaining a following, they really took off.
It is thought that a child’s book author, Jonathan B Wright started the trend.
It began in the 1990s, when he found something unusual in his home.
“1993 or so is when we first discovered one in our own home. Inside of that door is a stairway that leads up to yet another door that has been locked every time that we’ve checked.”
Eventually, he decided to install additional fairy doors for his daughter and then took it public a decade later.
His first public fairy door appeared in April, 2005. 10 days later, another one showed up at a nearby shop.
You can see more about it in this video:
Children have fallen in love with the fairy doors and it is not unusual to see a gift left outside.
“There are multiple things that have surprise me about the whole phenomena. One is the concept of things that are left for the fairies, their gifts. Somewhat like a wishing well concept, I guess, that children for the most part leave coins and drawings and little tiny trinkets for the fairies in the hopes that it will be a gesture of good will.”
What an awesome idea!
