Many of us wait from one Olympics to the next, and we can hardly contain our excitement when the new Olympics are about to start. There is just something about watching people compete in this type of a venue that really gets the blood pumping.
With the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, it is a good time to take a look back at some of the old Olympic venues. You will be shocked with what you see, and how much of the money that was spent on those events has simply gone to waste.
1. Ski Jump Tower, Cortina D’ampezzo, Italy, 1956 Winter Olympics Venue
Andreas Dascher introduced a new type of jumping on this tower that would be named after him. Prior to the time that the 1956 games took place, athletes would hold their arms over their heads. He reasoned that if they held their arms at their side, they would fly further.
2. Bobsleigh Track, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics
The old bobsleigh and luge track is crumbling and filled with graffiti, but there is new life in the area. Extreme bikers have taken to the track and are having a lot of fun using this old venue.
3. Bobsled Track, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics Venue
This old bobsled track is abandoned and falling apart. Much of what has been left from the Olympic venue in Sarajevo has reduced to rubble, primarily due to the conflict with the former Yugoslavia.
4. Swimming Pool, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
Almost 80 years have passed since the swimming pool was used. Over 4000 athletes were housed in the area during the time that they were under Nazi rule. The village was then used as a German army barracks shortly after the games took place.
5. Olympic Sports Complex, Sarajevo, 1984 Winter Olympics Venue
Part of the old Olympic sports complex in Sarajevo has now been turned into a graveyard.
6. Olympic Village, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
I would say the swimming pool could use some work
7. Ski Jumping Tower, Grenoble, France, 1968 Winter Olympic Games
An abandoned tower but a beautiful view.
8. Beach Volleyball Venue, Beijing, 2008 Summer Olympics
It’s been less than a decade, but this venue lies deserted and is unmaintained.
9. Main Swimming Pool, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
They never even took down the seats for the judges…
10. Kayak And Canoeing Venue, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
11. Olympic Canoe And Kayak Slalom Center, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
12. Barricades Outside The Stadium, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
13. Olympic Village, Berlin, 1936 Summer Olympics Venue
The houses for the athletes have now been deserted.
14. Olympic Flag Posts, Athens, 2004 Summer Olympics Venue
15. Olympic Mascots Lie Unwanted, Beijing, 2008 Summer Olympics
These discarded mascots from the Beijing Olympic Games are a reminder of the high price of hosting an event.
