Man Captures Pictures Of Light Pillars Over Canada’s Night Sky

Most of us go to sleep before it gets too late and sleep through the night. Unfortunately, we might just be missing the show of a lifetime when we do. That is what happened when Timothy Joseph Elzinga woke up in the middle of the night to help his child, who was crying.

When Timothy looked outside through the bathroom window, he realised he was seeing something most amazing. Across the sky he saw pillars of light that looked like something out of a science fiction film. They were red, blue, orange and white lights known as light pillars.

Light pillars take place when ice crystals act like a mirror and reflect light. They are typically seen in polar regions but they can also appear at lower latitudes when the temperatures get frigid.

Elzinga lives in North Bay, Ontario. The temperatures that morning had dipped to -18 degrees celsius. He ran outside, still in his PJs but soon realised he needed to bundle up.

He used his skills as a semi-professional photographer to take the following pictures on his smart phone. He then uploaded them with the video to YouTube.

The light pillars continued to remain in the sky for 45 minutes after the pictures were taken.
