Sherene Zarrabi has recently quit her job at Dainty Hooligan, a juniors clothing store. She did so because she was told by the CEO that she was not “model material.”
The exchange took place through email when Jessica Issler, Sherene’s boss, saw pictures of her posted on Instagram wearing the company’s clothing.
After receiving the email, Sherene posted an image of it to Facebook. It reads, in part:
Something I want to make sure you keep in mind: I want size small, the stereotypical ‘model’ type to model our clothes. Please use our pictures of our models if Stillwater store can’t find someone who would be considered ‘model material.
Apparently, Sherene wasn’t what the CEO had in mind. The CEO also deleted all of the pictures from the stores Instagram account.
Sherene is a student at the Oklahoma State University and was working for Dainty Hooligan since September, 2015. She began posting pictures of herself wearing the clothing made by the company in October. She had not heard any negative feedback until she received the email.
After she read the email, she immediately quit her job and began spreading the message on Facebook that no one should be ashamed of their body. She started off with the words:
I am fully comfortable with who I am and the way I look.
I do not want to respresent [sic] or support a business that has such archaic values and beliefs. THIS is the reason young girls have body image issues.
The post ended with the words:
Love yourself, no matter what you look like.
Since it has been posted, it has received many supportive comments and has been shared thousands of times. It is always nice to see somebody turn a negative issue into a positive message.
