Many people find plastic plates and cups to be convenient but if you happen to live in France, that convenience is going away. They are the first country to ban all plastic cups, plates and silverware in a law that will take effect fully in 2020. If restaurants want to use disposable dishes in France, they will have to use those that are made from biologically sourced materials so that they can be composted.
In July, France banned plastic bags, something that other countries have also done but they are the first ones to also ban plastic cutlery and dishes. France hosted the Paris climate change conference in 2015 and has been a leader in climate change. The newest ban attracted criticism from the packaging industry who says that it violates European Union rules for free movement of goods.
