There are certain actors that really have a lot of pull in Hollywood. Some of them are seen in multiple movies but others have one particular breakout role that really takes them to the next level.
Even though Brendan Fraser has been making movies for many years, he recently had one of those breakout roles in a movie that premiered, ‘The Whale.’ When he was at the premiere recently, he received a six-minute standing ovation according to Variety.
Frazier, who is a 53-year-old actor that is perhaps best known for starring in The Mummy, truly went through something outstanding in order to get ready for this role. He had to transform into a 600 pound man.
Footage from the standing ovation was posted on Twitter and people couldn’t be happier. It was the first time since the film was revealed that it was so well received and the actor couldn’t even get out of the theater.
Frazier is well-known for being a very modest individual and you can see that he is close to crying when people were applauding him. It was almost too much for him to handle.
A play by Samuel D. Hunter was the resource used for this particular film that focused on Charlie, a man who was living with obesity. He wants to reunite with his estranged daughter after abandoning his wife for a gay lifestyle.
Charlie eventually developed a compulsive eating disorder and gained a lot of weight. His lover had died, which is what caused him to put on the pounds.
Frazier spoke with Variety and talked about his role as Charlie. He spoke about how much he had to push himself.
I wanted to know what I was capable of.
If there’s no risk, then why bother? I want to learn from the people I’m working with at this point in my career. I’ve had such variety, a lot of high highs and low lows, so what I’m keen for, in the second half of my time doing this, is to feel like I’m contributing to the craft and I’m learning from it.
This is a prime opportunity. I wanted to disappear into it. My hope was that I would become unrecognizable.
I developed muscles I did not know I had.
I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating. It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being.
